I believe I was in second grade when our class went to the library. We were told to get something off the shelf to read and I, feeling quite lazy, decided to grab a Life Magazine because it had mostly pictures to look at.
Inside that issue of Life was a documentary photo series by Gordon Parks called, A Harlem Family. I was fascinated by the pictures and, even though my life and the lives of the people featured in that series couldn’t be any more disparate, I felt a connection. A great photographer can do that — meld connections where there otherwise, wouldn’t be any. Gordon Parks was a great photographer.
This documentary is an intimate look at his life and career. Parks was a true Renaissance man who excelled not only as a photographer, but also as a novelist, poet, journalist, musician, and filmmaker.
